Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new management information base (MIB) called Service Monitoring (SM) MIB. The MIB enables a network manager to gather end-to-end management information by utilizing special test packet. The special packet is an Internet control message protocol (ICMP) application that can be sent to a remote network element to monitor its Internet services. The SM MIB makes end-to-end management possible without using any special measurement architectures or equipments. Real examples show that the proposed SM MIB is useful for end-to-end quality of service (QoS) monitoring. The accuracy of obtained data, priority and security issues are discussed.
