Synonyme: rheumatoide Arthritis (dies ist die heute international gebräuchliche Bezeichnung), »rheumatoid arthritis«. Die rheumatoide Arthritis ist eine entzündliche systemische Bindegewebserkrankung unklarer Ätiologie, deren Hauptcharakteristikum eine chronische, u. U. remittierend oder schubweise verlaufende Gelenkentzündung (Synovialitis) darstellt. Sie befällt zumeist symmetrisch die peripheren Gelenke und führt über eine erosive Synovialitis zur Gelenkdestruktion, Deformität und Invalidität. Allgemeine Krankheitszeichen sowie entzündlicher Befall von Sehnenscheiden und Schleimbeuteln, seltener von Gefäßen, serösen Häuten, der Augen sowie innerer Organe sind charakteristisch. Bestimmte Organmanifestationen definieren Sonderformen der rheumatoiden Arthritis.
