Schwindel entsteht im Kopf als Symptom der erlebten Instabilität. Dass wir uns in der Welt sicher verankert fühlen, ist keineswegs selbstverständlich, sondern eine Leistung des Gehirns, das dazu verschiedene afferente Sinne nutzt, vor allem das vestibuläre, das somatosensorische und das visuelle System. Mithilfe des efferenten motorischen Systems steuert es unsere Bewegungen und das Gleichgewicht. Im engen Wechselspiel von Sensorik und Motorik bewertet das Gehirn beständig die Position im Raum sowie die Eigen und Umweltbewegungen und erzeugt dabei eine innere Repräsentation (oder gar Illusion) vom stabilen Ich in der Welt.
