Abstract

Many of the most fundamental questions in relation to supernovae, like abundance determinations, isotope ratios, the IR-catastrophe, molecule and dust formation, mixing, possible pulsar input, and circumstellar interaction are best studied at epochs later than one year. The VLT offers new opportunities to study these, especially in the near and far-IR, to comparable levels as for SN 1987A. The most interesting VLT instruments for the study of the late phases are FORS for the optical spectrum, ISAAC for the near-IR and VISIR for far-IR photometry and low resolution spectroscopy.
