Eine hochwertige Qualität der intensivmedizinischen Versorgung wird von Patienten, Angehörigen, den Kostenträgern und der Gesellschaft erwartet. Dieses Ziel entspricht auch dem Selbstverständnis ärztlicher Tätigkeit und ist in der Berufsordnung definiert, in der die »gewissenhafte Ausführung der gebotenen medizinischen Maßnahmen nach den Regeln der ärztlichen Kunst« eingefordert wird. Maßnahmen zur Sicherung der ärztlichen Qualität, wie beispielsweise Fallbesprechungen, Morbiditäts- und Mortalitätskonferenzen oder auch Chefarztvisiten sind seit langem integraler Bestandteil medizinischen Handelns.
