Zusammenfassung

Der Beginn der Kinderherzchirurgie ist auf den 08.08.1938 zu datieren. An diesem Tag ligierte Robert E. Gross am Children’s Hospital in Boston erstmalig erfolgreich einen persistierenden Ductus arteriosus Botalli, eine extrakardiale Läsion. Obgleich Gibbon der Erste war, der erfolgreich die von ihm entwickelte Herz-Lungen-Maschine zum Verschluss eines Vorhofseptumdefekts einsetzte, so ist doch die größte Bedeutung für den Beginn der Chirurgie am offenen Herzen zur Korrektur angeborener Herzfehler in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren C. Walton Lillehei und seinem Team aufgrund ihrer unermüdlichen klinischen und experimentellen Bemühungen an der University of Minnesota zuzuschreiben.
