Botulinum Toxin in Urology

Abstract

Children with detrusor overactivity, especially spina bifida and cerebral palsy kids, may also be good candidates for bladder botulinum toxin therapy. Effects on detrusor compliance, resolution of vesicoureteral reflux and/or hydronephrosis are some key questions raised when considering a child for bladder botulinum toxin injection (Schurch and Corcos 2005). This chapter focus on issues important for the use of botulinum toxin in pediatric population. We recommend the practitioner, especially those new to using botulinum toxin to read the (Chap. 3) neurogenic and (Chap. 4) idiopathic bladder chapters first. Consideration should be given to the appropriate dose of toxin in children, patient preparation and injection technique.
