Abstract
In patients suspected to have an acute bleeding, accurate localization of the bleeding site and assessment of the severity of blood loss are essential for the proper management of the condition.
In gastrointestinal bleeding, a distinction is made between upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. The most frequent causes of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal are: duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, gastric erosions, varices and Mallory-Weiss tears. Lower gastrointestinal bleeding is most commonly caused by angiodysplasia, diverticula, polyps or bowel cancer.
