Abstract

We examined the presence of WT1-specific mRNA in bone marrow aspirates or peripheral blood samples of 76 children suffered from acute leukemia at diagnosis and / or relapse. Samples were analyzed by RT-PCR. WT1 -specific mRNA was detected in 79% of patients at diagnosis and in 90% of samples at time of relapse.

The WT1 expression in bone marrow was monitored during the clinical course of some patients. The prognostic value and qualification of WT1 expression for monitoring of MRD (minimal residual disease) during chemotherapy must be confirmed. In contrast to other tumor-specific markers the applicability of WT1 gene expression in most cases of acute leukemia is an important advantage.
