Abstract

This paper is an overview of agent-based models and/or bio-inspired devices that have been defined in the field of formal language theory. Grammar systems, colonies and eco-grammar systems are presented as syntactical devices for multi-agent architectures. L systems, DNA computing and P systems show the biological inspiration/motivation in formal languages. And finally, Networks of Evolutionary Processors can be defined as bio-inspired multi-agent systems. All these models can be used to compute languages, either natural or formal.
