Automated Handling of Limp Foils in Lithium-Ion-Cell Manufacturing

Leveraging Technology for a Sustainable World

Abstract

Manufacturing lithium-ion cells for automotive applications requires special solutions not only for the production of electrodes and separators, but also for cell assembly as the limp foil sheets are stacked to form a cell stack. The automated handling of limp foils like anode, cathode and especially, the separator, which is also porous, is critical for the life cycle performance of the cells. Therefore, high requirements must be met as regards the applied forces during gripping and the fixing of foils in different handling procedures. A force sensitive handling method has been selected, where the gripping force can be adjusted and regulated in a closed-loop-control. This solution has the potential to contribute to an improvement in the reliability of handling processes for the production of lithium-Ion-cells.
