Abstract

The healthcare market is not perfect. Patients seek high quality healthcare at low prices but providers maintain that high quality comes at high cost. Moreover, the patient often is not aware of the medical services germane to him/her, and the quality of services provided. By default, suppliers (hospitals and physicians) decide for the patients in terms of diagnostics and treatments. The information asymmetry inhibits patients from shopping around for price and quality. Health insurance, while minimizing the impact of demand shocks, does not address the quality issue. The healthcare delivery chain is therefore ripe for a major transformation in treatments and medicines, and innovations in the value chain.
