Abstract

An emergence of interest in medical and surgical alternatives to the classic transurethral prostatectomy has occurred in the last decade. These treatments are aimed at the static and dynamic components of infravesical obstruction (Caine 1986). Transurethral prostatic resection eliminates static obstructing tissue and is a reliable and effective operation in most patients, especially those with larger glands. In men with minimal prostate enlargement or “primary bladder neck hyperplasia,” the dynamic neurologically mediated component is prominent, and these individuals may respond well to alternative therapies. One specific type of medical therapy involves α-adrenergic blocking agents. This chapter reviews the current status of another alternative, balloon dilatation of the prostate, which affects both the static and dynamic obstructive factors.
