Abstract
The nature of the small electron-lucent vesicles present in neurosecretory neurons have been the subject of controversy for many years. Some authors have suggested that they may be synaptic vesicles containing acetylcholine since they resemble in size (c. 400–500 Å diameter) and position the synaptic vesicles in known cholinergic fibres (De Robertis and Bennett, 1954). This view has been criticised (Holmes and Knowles, 1960) because the content of these vesicles has not been positively identified.
