Kinins and Ventilation of the Lungs

  • Chapter
Bradykinin, Kallidin and Kallikrein

Abstract

Kinins influence mammalian lungs both directly and indirectly. In several species, kinins lessen the volume of air entering the lungs during spontaneous or artificial ventilation in vivo and, in the guinea pig, they are also effective in isolated preparations of lungs or tracheobronchial muscle. In some species also, kinins raise the pressure in the pulmonary artery and constrict isolated pulmonary blood vessels. Kinins affect, too, the rate and depth of the ventilatory movements of ribs and diaphragm.
