Stability of conformations of polyelectrolytes in flows and electric fields

Abstract

The equilibrium conformations of macromolecules and their stability are studied in dilute solutions of polyelectrolytes under the action of an external stimulus such as an applied electric field or a flow. It is shown that the stability of equilibrium conformations can be studied with the help of a potential function even though the equilibria may not be thermodynamical ones for the whole rheological system.
