Occurrence of Substance P in the Central Nervous System of Fish

Abstract

In 1931 Eulerand Gaddumobserved that extracts of mammalian intestine and brain contained a substance which stimulated intestinal motility. The active principle which exerts its action also in the presence of atropine can be extracted from intestine and brain by boiling at pH4 and subsequent precipitation with ammonium sulphate [Euler(1936a)]. The activity disappears after incubation with trypsin [Euler(1936b)]. The active substance, which was provisionally named Substance P, is stable at boiling temperature at pH4 [Gaddumand Schild(1934)] and is dialysable. It shows the general properties of a polypeptide.
