Abstract
Tear fluid is drained by the nasolacrimal ducts (Fig. 1a, b) into the inferior meatus of the nose. The first exact description of the nasolacrimal ducts originates form Giovanni Battista Carcano Leone (1574). His explanations lead, together with the work of Niels Stensen (1662) on tear secretion, to a plausible anatomical conception of the entire lacrimal system.
