Zusammenfassung
Im Jahre 1894 veröffentlichte der holländische Mathematiker Thomas-Jean Stieltjes (1856–1894, ab 1877 an der Sternwarte in Leiden, ab 1886 als Professor der Mathematik in Toulouse tätig) eine originelle Arbeit über Kettenbrüche, in welcher er ein neues, später nach ihm benanntes Integral ∫ b a f dg einführte. Er nimmt an, daß f stetig und g monoton wachsend ist und bildet, wenn Z = (t0,..., t p ) eine Zerlegung des Intervalls I = [a, b] ist, die Summen.
