Abstract
Overall 5-year survival and prognosis of colorectal malignancies showed only a slight improvement (10%–20%) over the past 40–50 years [1,2]. This contrasts with the enormous advances in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease [3,4], with the existence of new combined adjuvant treatments [5, 6], with the refinement of surgical techniques [7, 8], and with the evidence of lower endoscopy as an effective screening procedure [9,10].
