Abstract

There is some controversy as to whether perioperative infection prophylaxis is routinely necessary or not [8]. In general and in small procedures on the cutis, antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated [2]. Because of the bacteriostatic effect of the local anesthetic and the wash-out effect of the TLA solution mentioned earlier (see Chap. 8), the risk of infection is very slim in procedures performed under TLA anyway. Nevertheless, many surgeons like to provide additional antibiotic protection for the patient, especially in extended operations such as liposuction or surgery for varicose veins.
