Abstract

Leishmaniases are caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, family Trypanosomatidae, order Kinetoplastida. With regard to the clinico-immuno-pathological aspects of leishmaniases, a wide spectrum of manifestations can be observed, with either tegumentary or visceral involvement. As in leprosy, tegumentary leishmaniasis presents with a spectrum of aspects varying from localized cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (CL and MCL), representing the responsive pole, to diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL), representing the unresponsive pole. Between these polar forms a borderline or intermediate disease has been characterized (Bryceson 1969; Moriearty et al. 1978). Visceral presentations also range from subclinical to fatal disease.
