Abstract
Some of the interesting properties of quasicrystals (QCs), such as low friction and “non-stick” character, involve surface phenomena. Furthermore, in most proposed applications, QCs would be in the form of low-dimensional solids coatings, thin films, precipitates, or composites — where the ratio of surface area to volume is high, and where surface or interface properties could be crucial to the success of the application (Dubois et al. 1993, Dubois et al. 1994a, Dubois 1997). These facts motivate fundamental studies of structure, composition, and chemical reactivity of QC surfaces. A main goal is to determine whether and how the interesting properties of the surface may relate to the unusual atomic structure of the bulk.
