Central Nervous System Neuropeptides Involved in Obesity

  • Chapter
Obesity: Pathology and Therapy

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 149))

Abstract

In recent years obesity has emerged as a major threat to the health of mankind. At the same time, advances into appetite regulation and weight control has led to and helped our understanding of the pathophysiology of this complex system. Opinion has therefore changed from consideration of obesity as a self-inflicted problem to a view that it is a complicated disease with an associated increase in morbidity and mortality. In this chapter we review the central nervous system (CNS) neuropeptides which have been implicated as components of the systems regulating body weight.
