Cushing Syndrome

  • Chapter
ACNE and ROSACEA

Abstract

In 1932, when Harvey W. Cushing first described pituitary basophilism, little was known about the delicately balanced hypothalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis. He noted, however, the frequent association of pituitary basophilic tumors with adrenal cortical hyperplasia. Hyperfunction of the adrenocortical tissue is responsible for this syndrome, if it has not been iatrogenically induced by overdosage with corticosteroids. Among noniatrogenic cases, four times more women than men are affected, and the peak age of onset is the twenties and thirties.
