Abstract
Algae and photoautotrophic protists have evolved a tremendous diversity of cell shapes and richness in intracellular architectur. Publications dealing with this subject have steadily increased over the last 3 years, reflecting the continuing efforts to document this diversity on the light and electron microscopie levels. Consequently, many new algal and protistan organisms have been discovered or species have been redescribed in greater detail, which has led to a further refinement of our concepts of cell architecture and added new examples to the collection of cell types that are potentially interesting for the study of cell morphogenesis.
