The Importance of Cytology in Menstrual Cycle Diagnosis in Women

Abstract

In the course of cyclic hormonal fluctuation cytological changes in the vaginal and cervical epithelium can be correlated with the stages of the menstrual cycle. Cytology has been applied for many years in the diagnosis of hormonal status in women. Hormonal alterations occurring in pathological cycles may also be identified by other cytological procedures. Although modern diagnostic methods such as determination of hormonal status are more precise and allow an evaluation of cyclic fluctuations closer to the actual ovulation date and with in a shorter testing period, the importance of cytological changes occurring in the vagina should not be neglected. The therapeutic impact of drugs on the cycle can also be assessed via cytology.
