Abstract
The process of weighing drug-induced risks against disease-induced risk is a complicated multistep procedure. Although the basic principle was laid out more than 2 000 years ago by Hippocrates — primum est non nocere — the interpretation and implementation of this principle has varied over time and has become more complicated in the present situation with the advent of modern pharmacotherapy.
