Abstract
The rapid transneuronal disintegration after deafferentation of the pontine nuclei in young animals has been discussed in detail in Part I of the present study. It was found that this reaction occurred only after deafferentation of immature neurons and that it changed gradually into a mild transneuronal atrophy with increasing maturation of the neurons. This transneuronal degeneration of young animals occurred somewhat more rapidly than the retrograde degeneration in the pons in animals of the same age. The cytoplasmic changes in the disintegrating neurons also showed certain differences in these two types of degeneration.
