Abstract

It is a curious fact of medical history that entero (exo) toxin production by a wide variety of enteric pathogens has been appreciated only within the past decade while the pathogens themselves have been recognized since the beginning of bacteriology. Recent investigations have implicated toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, certain strains of “non-pathogenic” Escherichia coli, as well as Shigella dysenteriae, C. perfringens and possibly Pseudomonas aeruginosa as being responsible for diarrheal disease.
