Abstract

Growth of crystals certainly begins in a non-equilibrium condition, and even after establishment of large faces there is still an energy barrier to continued growth. Consequently caution is necessary in interpretation of growth-controlled features. In this chapter an attempt is made to understand the mechanisms of growth of feldspars by combining theoretical ideas with observations of morphological features. The geometry of chemical zoning is considered in relation to various proposals concerning the change of petrologic factors during growth. The morphology (tracht) of feldspar crystals is described phenomenologically for different petrologic conditions and an attempt made to relate the observations to the crystalline atomic patterns. Finally various coarse textures shown by feldspars are described and evaluated. Fine-scale intergrowths are discussed in Chapter 19, and are differentiated from the coarse intergrowths because of their greater dependence on forces across internal boundaries. Twinning is treated separately in Chapter 18 because of its remarkable complexity. Intergrowths of feldspars with other minerals are treated in Chapter 20.
