Fluorescence Microscopy of Chromosomes and Interphase Nuclei

  • Chapter
Methods in Human Cytogenetics

Abstract

With the fluorescence microscope, objects can be visualized that have the property of emitting light of longer wavelength (visible light) when excited by light of shorter wavelength (e.g. ultra-violet light). Unstained chromosomes show no suitable fluorescence of this type, but certain fluorescent dyes have a considerable specific affinity for nucleoproteins.
