Part of the book series: Telecommunications ((TELECOMMUNICATI,volume 1))

Abstract

Discussions of the value of two-way educational programs often leave implicit the assumptions about why two-way telecommunications are necessary. This lack of explicit reasoning makes it easy for those who believe in the value of two-way programs to agree, but it also holds the risk that interactive systems will be designed that serve unnecessary or inappropriate functions for individuals in a particular setting. This paper draws a distinction among three functions of two-way communications for learning, and discusses how they have shaped the educational uses of interactive cable in Spartanburg S. C.
