Abstract
The majority of unilateral occlusions of the internal carotid artery (ICA) should be completely compensated by the numerous collateral channels available. The outcome for these patients, however, varies considerably from decades with no symptoms and a complete absence of patho-anatomical changes to death within a few days with extensive necrosis in the entire vascular irrigation area.
