Abstract
Of all sampling techniques, the auger methods are the most suitable for taking volumetric soil-root samples. The methods involve taking samples by hand augers or by mechanical sampling machines, and separating the roots from the soil by washing. Except for special purposes no attempt is made to keep the roots in their natural positions. The size of the samples generally is smaller than those from the monolith methods.
