Plain X-Ray Diagnosis of Developmental Narrow Lumbar Canal

  • Chapter
The Narrow Lumbar Canal

Abstract

This paper deals only with X-ray diagnosis without contrast media of the so-called developmental narrow lumbar canal. Narrowings due to achondroplasia bone diseases, sequelae of spinal injuries, or surgery and spondylolisthesis are excluded. Three clinical pictures should lead to perform a plain X-ray examination of the lumbar spine in the search for a narrow lumbar canal: first, but not only, thanks to Verbiest [19], the well-known neurogenic intermittent claudication syndrom, but also, though less suggestive of the diagnosis, radicular pains, either uni- or bilateral; and lastly, the finding of disc herniation or of spondylosis does not preclude looking for an associated narrow canal revealed clinically by the above mentioned additional causes.
