Abstract

Surgery to correct congenital deformities of the hand is particularly rewarding and attractive, but the difficulty of these operations and the great responsibility of the surgeon should not be underestimated. Orthopaedists and other surgeons interested in this field will gain only limited personal experience, because these deformities are rare and vary greatly in appearance. The rapid progress in hand surgery has made it impossible to give up-to-date information in textbooks and surgical manuals. Frequently they still describe operations that have been proven to be of doubtful value or have been replaced by better procedures.
