Preparation and Immunochemical Analysis of Non-Ionic Detergent-Soluble Protein From Human Stratum Corneum

Stratum Corneum

Abstract

Mechanical stimulation of the skin surface in the presence of buffers containing Triton X-100 leads to the release of large numbers of corneocytes. These cells are essentially intact as judged by electron microscopy [1]. Even the corneocyte envelope appears unaltered by this treatment, suggesting that only intercellular and cell surface proteins are being released into the buffer. This material may be of physiological importance in desquamation, and in disease states such as ichthyosis. Here we describe the preparation and characterisation of non-ionic detergent soluble (NIDS) protein from normal human stratum corneum in vivo.
