Abstract

In isolated organ perfusion experiments, performed as early as the last century (Bernard 1855; Martin 1883), the lungs were used mainly as a convenient and physiologic method to oxygenate the blood. As interest in lung function increased, the isolated perfused preparation was used to evaluate control of the pulmonary circulation (Lohr 1924) and pulmonary blood volume (Drinker et al. 1926). Berry and Daly (1931) studied pressure-flow relationships in the pulmonary artery of guinea pig, monkey, and dog lungs. A similar preparation was subsequently used by Nisell (1948) and by Duke (1951) to study the effect of alveolar gas composition on alveolar vessels of cat lungs and by Hughes et al. (1958) to study edema formation in rabbit lungs. By this time, the perfused lung preparation had reached a stage of development where it could be applied routinely (although perhaps not without difficulty) to studies of circulatory and ventilatory mechanics (Allison et al. 1961; Lloyd 1964; West et al. 1964; Hauge 1968), pulmonary edema (Lunde 1976), and pulmonary gas exchange (Rosenberg and Forster 1960; Niden et al. 1962).
