Gastric Function in Primary Anorexia Nervosa

  • Conference paper
The Psychobiology of Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract

Gastrointestinal function plays an important role in the pathophysiology of starvation as well as in that of primary anorexia nervosa (PAN). Acute gastric dilatation has been reported in PAN patients (Evans 1968; Jennings and Klidjian 1974; Russell 1966; Scobie 1973) as well as in emaciated prisoners of war during refeeding after prolonged starvation (Markowski 1947). In another study, dilatation of the proximal duodenal loop without delay in gastric emptying was demonstrated in 10 of 20 anorexia nervosa patients undergoing barium meal X-ray examination (Scobie 1973). Until recently, the only information available concerning gastric function in relation to nutritional status in man was that gastric emptying was slowed in normal volunteers during starvation (Keys et al. 1950).
