Plant Response to Stress

Abstract

Cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers characterize the climate of Mediterranean-type ecosystems (Aschmann 1973; Thrower and Bradbury 1977). Mediterranean shrublands are typical in these regions, i.e. scrub formations of woody shrubs with mainly evergreen assimilating organs and semi-sclerophyll to sclerophyll leaf consistency (e.g. chaparral, matorral, maquis). An overstory of small trees and an understory of annuals and herbaceous perennials may also be present (Specht 1969; Montenegro 1978; Di Castri 1981).
