Schizoaffective and Other Atypical Psychoses: The Genetical Aspect

Schizoaffective Psychoses

Abstract

Diagnostic usage has changed over the years, and this is particular true with respect to the atypical psychoses. The diagnosis “atypical psychosis” used to be made by exclusion. The label was attached to clinical pictures that did not fit into any of the standard categories of endogenous, reactive, or organic psychoses, or it was given to schizophrenias not fitting the Kraepelinian definition, especially with regard to the criterion of poor outcome. This diagnosis used to be rare.
