Abstract
This paper gives results of applying Stokes’ function with different integration radii (cap sizes) for new FFT geoid solutions of Australia and Scandinavia. While Australian results show that a limited cap size or a modified Stokes kernel is necessary for optimal results, this is not true for Scandinavia, where large cap sizes are necessary. This must ultimately reflect problems in either the fit of the spherical harmonic model, or systematic errors in the terrestrial gravity data. The overall quality of the computed geoids are compared to GPS levelling, ranging from 30 cm in the Australian-wide GPS network, to 2–5 cm in national Scandinavian networks, reflecting mainly differences in quality of the available levelling data.
