Abstract

Although shigellosis is endemic throughout the world, it is of special concern in developing areas in which poor sanitation and low personal hygiene standards are responsible for a large number of cases. Children represent the major target of the disease, and malnutrition certainly accounts for the severity of the cases as well as a significant rate of mortality.
