Surfactant Replacement Therapy

Abstract

This paper summarizes the results of a large randomized multicenter trial, involving the use of a new type of surfactant (Curosurf), isolated from minced porcine lungs by a combination of washing, chloroform-methanol extraction, and liquid-gel chromatography. It contains 99% polar lipids, mainly phospholipids, and 1% hydrophobic, low molecular weight (< 15 kDa) proteins [1].
