Zusammenfassung
1846 begann mit dem ersteri operativen Eingriff in Äthernarkose durch Warren in dem dadurch berühmt gewordenen Horsaal des Massachusetts General-Hospital, dem heutigen Ätherdom in Boston, die moderne Änasthesie. Die analgetische Wirkung des Äthers hatten Jackson und wenig später Long [3] offensichtlich als erste erkannt, Jackson unterrichtete 5 Jahre später Morton davon, der dann die berühmt gewordene Narkose — „that’s no humbug“ — durchgeführt hat [9]. 1847 narkotisierten sich Simpson und 2 seiner Freunde mit Chloroform [20], und ab diesem Zeitpunkt lagen 2 potente Anästhetika in Konkurrenz, ergänzt durch Lachgas, über das allerdings Mikulicz, ein Anhänger des Äthers, schrieb: „Was die Narkose mit Lustgas betrifft, so ist sie heute wohl allgemein außer Gebrauch gekommen“ [16]. Das war 1905.
