Zusammenfassung
Im Jahre 1928 wurde von Stricker u. Grüter eine Substanz in Rinderhypophysenextrakten entdeckt, die in vivo die Milchsekretion stimulierte. Riddle et al. (1933) führten den Namen Prolaktin (PRL) für jenes Hypophysenvorderlappenhormon (HVL-Hormon) ein, das u.a. auch die „Kropfmilch“produktion bei Tauben anregte. Der daraus entwickelte Taubenkropfsacktest war lange Zeit das einzige biologische Verfahren, Prolaktinaktivität in Gewebeextrakten und Gewebeflüssig- keiten nachzuweisen. Prolaktin konnte 1937 aus Schafhypophysen isoliert werden (White et al. 1937). Es war das erste HVL-Hormon überhaupt, das in hochgereinigter Form vorlag. Auch bei vielen anderen Spezies - Knochenfischen, Amphibien, Vögeln und Säugern - ließ sich mit Hilfe des Taubenkropfsacktestes Prolaktin als eigenständiges, vom Wachstumshormon trennbares laktogenes Hormon nachweisen, dessen physiologische Bedeutung sich allerdings bei verschiedenen Spezies äußerst unterschiedlich erwies (Nicoll 1980). Prolaktin ist demnach ein altes Hormon, dessen biologische Bedeutung sich aber während der Vertebratenphylogenese erheblich gewandelt hat. Seine molekulare Struktur hat sich hingegen im Vergleich zu dem dem Prolaktin ähnlichen Wachstumshormon kaum verändert. Wegen seiner zahlreichen Wirkungen wurde von Nicoll (1980) auch der Name Versatilin (Vielzweckhormon) vorgeschlagen, den er für angebrachter hielt als Prolaktin, ein Name, der sich ausschließlich von der laktogenen Aktivität ableitet.
