Abstract

In planning this volume the main objective was to provide aspiring cardiologists with basic information on the mode of action of antiarrhythmic drugs, to facilitate a rational approach to therapy. Since no single remedy can be both safe and efficacious in all circumstances, an understanding of what individual drugs actually do is essential if combinations of different types of agent are to be exhibited. Indeed, combinations of similarly acting drugs may increase efficacy without a corresponding multiplication of toxicity. In addition, the clinical pharmacology of all types of antiarrhythmic compound has been described by experts, so that the book can serve as a practical manual for physicians responsible for the clinical management of cardiac arrhythmias. Basic scientists involved in the development and testing of new drugs may also find this information useful in providing an insight into the utility of the compounds they may create or study.
