Mafenide — Still an Allergen of Importance?

  • Conference paper
Current Topics in Contact Dermatitis

Summary

Mafenide contact allergy was found in 149 (3.5%) of 4270 patients tested in Munich (FRG) between 1976 and 1987. In spite of the fact that the main mafenide-containing product, Marfanil-Prontalbin-Puder, was removed from the market in 1974, 40 patients reported an onset of dermatitis less than 1 year ago; in addition, 28 patients were under the age of 40. It was demonstrated that mafenide-containing products are still on the market, mainly in veterinary medicine. Therefore, mafenide should remain incorporated in standard test series, at least in Germany.
