Abstract

The major histocompativility complex (MHC) in man is known as the HLA system and has been localized to a small segment of chromosome 6. The HLA complex is the most polymorphic genetic system found in humans. It is composed of a series of at least 11 closely linked genes. Based on the most recent nomenclature report (Bodmer et al. 1988) the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the expressed products of seven multiallelic loci (HLA-A, -B, -C, -D, -DR, -DP, and -DQ) along with the existence of three other genes (HLA-E, -DN, and -DO).

When my family moved to our new homeland Canada, it was the mention of the name Milan Hašek as both my PhD supervisor and mentor that was largely responsible for my first position. Throughout the worldwide scientific field Milan was well known and respected professionally. Those of us who were fortunate to have been associated with him will always remember his boundless energy, high spirits, and especially his friendliness that made Milan dear to everyone who worked with him.
